2009 YOUTH WRITING CONTEST WINNERS

GREEN THROUGH PURPLE
by Harry W. Yeatts Jr.

THE PURPLE SECRETS
By Emily B.
Age 12

Hidden,
Guilt-ridden;
She waits behind all the purple,
Trying to hide the green
She is so ashamed of.
Her eyes,
Her eyes,
Her eyes,
Are purple-rimmed pools of forest-
A deep green that she Hates.
And inside this forest,
Inside this tangled, sad forest,
Hides the Secrets.
She knows it all:
The Secrets of the World.
In these green eyes,
She sees the Secrets-
And knows them by heart.
Shunned,
Shocked,
Separated,
She is not purple.
Her eyes
Are green-
They are rippling oceans of leaves,
And they are not accepted
In this
World Full of Purple Secrets.

So she hides
Behind all the purple,
And prays for an
Escape.
